We need to own our Internet

This weekend has been very interesting to say the least. However, let’s go back to how we got here. Back in April of 2022, Elon Musk announced he was purchasing Twitter for a sum of $44 billion dollars. It was at this point, we said:

After a while, it seemed like things were going to fizzle out and maybe it would be business as usual. Except then, October happened and Musk posted a tweet of him “letting that sink in” in Twitter HQ. So we started investigating Mastodon again:

Then, Friday happened. Musk banned an account for posting his private jet’s ADS-B data feed (which is not doxxing). Then he started banning journalists. As people started moving to Mastodon, he started banning links and wrongfully having them classified as malware. This is when we spun up xinsto.xyz.

This is our own Mastodon server and it takes part of the “fediverse”. I’ll talk more about this later.

We also started moving our brands over to our server:

Then today, Musk went full nuclear, blocking links to all third party social media sites. If this isn’t proof we need to own our Internet, I don’t know what is. That is why at Xinsto, we enable self-hosting. We encourage our customers to own their data. This is the future of the Internet. At almost impeccable timing, Tim Burners-Lee, the father of the world wide web, wants us to reclaim the Internet from tech giants. This is something we fully believe in and stand behind.

When it comes to the “fediverse”, thinks work differently. It’s not traditional social media. There are no algorithms to promote content. Your feed is curated how you curate it. You see what you want to see. If you’re curious about Mastodon and how to get started, I’ve posted a getting started guide.

Earlier tonight, Musk posted one of his Twitter polls asking if he should step down from Twitter. No matter what happens, we’re keeping xinsto.xyz going and continuing to use Mastodon. You should too.

Own your Internet!
